There is a gap between the astronomy in a high school textbook and the astronomy in a first-year college course. The textbook version is finished. The college version is arguments, uncertainty, and results that arrived last month.
These explainers try to close that gap using real current research — papers published this year, with citations and DOIs included so students can go read the primary literature themselves. Reading a real journal abstract is itself a skill worth teaching.
